What do you expect when you join one of the best engineering colleges of Punjab? The entire purpose of getting a technical degree from a good reputed University comes down to getting a respectable job. It is a known fact to everyone that in this scenario of inflation, not everyone can be guaranteed a job neither can the college forcibly place you.

But the case is different for the top engineering college of Punjab. DAVIET situated in Jalandhar has been involved in a placement related fraud. A BTech final year student of IT discipline at DAVIET Jalandhar (davietjal.org), was on cloud nine when she got placed with a Vadodara-based ‘Spectrum Planning Services Pvt Ltd’ on December 26, 2013, but her joy was short-lived. This is not the case of only one student but many others as well.  As many as 35 budding engineers of DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology (DAVIET) were cheated by a placement company, named Spectrum Planning Services, that doesn’t exist.

“I got an email from the company, asking me to deposit Rs 7,500 as a refundable amount for further processing. We asked our placement officer whether or not to send the draft and he said yes. But after few months, phones of the company officials responded switched off, the website of the company also disappeared,” said the Student, adding they have asked the college authorities and placement officer Sushil Parasher to check, but to no avail.

“When the students reported the matter to us, we wrote a letter to the company officials in June, but there was no reply. Since the date of joining for the students was July 14, we sent a reminder again in July,” said principal Sangal.

He added, “We will lodge a complaint with the Vadodara police tomorrow (Thursday). We have already mailed the entire episode to the Vadodra police and have asked them to lodge a complaint against the frauds.”

Sangal said, “The company had demanded original Class 10 certificates and a refundable security of Rs. 7500 from the students.”

Current Status:

The current status of the case is heartbreaking too. FIR had been lodged in this case on the request by DAVIET Staff Association, a teacher’s association of the same college.
Police is biasing the case in favor of Principal and TPO of college. Police didn’t add statements of students in its report sent to higher authorities. Statements given by students were against the college principal and TPO. FIR has been registered against the name of Company only. Principal’s and TPO’s names were not added into the FIR. Political pressure is being applied on police at Jalandhar. Students have not yet received their money. No justice has been given to students.
College has still mentioned the name of company, Spectrum planning Services, as past recruiters on its website.

Demand:

Students demand that DAV Management should refund their money because it was responsibility of college to check the background of company. Names of principal and TPO of college should be added in the FIR who had organized this fake placement drive. Police should re-investigate the matter.
